December 4, 2024
If you own property with retaining walls in New York City, it’s crucial to stay on top of inspection requirements. The city mandates inspections for all 2,423 retaining walls on a five-year cycle, with reports due by December 31st of the designated year.
Upcoming Deadlines to Remember:
- 2024: Inspections due for 687 retaining walls in the Bronx.
- 2025: Inspections due for 589 retaining walls in Manhattan.
Failure to submit your inspection report on time can result in significant penalties, including:
- Property owners who fail to submit an acceptable compliance report face penalties of $1,000 per year, starting from January 1 following the missed deadline.
- An additional $250 per month is applied beginning February 1 until the report is filed. For example, filing a report 18 months late would indeed result in a total penalty of $5,500 or more (12 months x $1,000 + 6 months x $250).
